The Reunion Concert

by: 13th Floor Elevators

While this live recording of Texas psychedelic trailblazers the 13th Floor Elevators was released the same year that the group staged a celebrated reunion show at Austin's Levitation Fest 2015 (formerly known as Austin Psych Fest), buyers should read the fine print on the back cover: this was recorded not at the Levitation Fest, but at a 1984 Elevators reunion show held at Austin's Liberty Lunch, which was absent the late lead guitarist Stacy Sutherland as well as lyricist and electric jug player Tommy Hall. Previously released under the more accurate title The Last Concert (which it was prior to the 2015 Levitation performance), this show featured three original members of the 13th Floor Elevators -- lead singer and guitarist Roky Erickson, bassist Ronnie Leatherman, and drummer John Ike Walton -- along with lead guitarist Greg "Catfish" Forrest. However, the band ended up playing only two songs from the Elevators' catalog -- "Splash 1" and "You're Gonna Miss Me" -- with the rest of the set devoted to material from Erickson's solo albums. The performance is solid, even if this often bombastic blues-rock doesn't bear much resemblance to the 13th Floor Elevators' thoughtful psychedelia, but the sound quality is iffy at best, sourced from an audience recording, and though this may be of interest to die-hard Elevators and Erickson fans, even they will likely consider The Reunion Concert an interesting oddity more than anything else. ~ Mark Deming
