Stand By Me [Prime Cuts]

by: Ben E. King

Ben E. King's easy sounds defied pigeonholing, and his early recordings charted on both soul and pop charts. While not a definitive collection, this is a panoramic overview of King's recording career spanning from the '50s to the '70s. All the major players are here "Spanish Harlem," "Don't Play That Song," "Stand By Me," and "I Who Have Nothing." If that's not enough, Prime Cuts scrounged up a tight medley of his Drifters leads that incorporates "This Magic Moment," "Dance With Me," and "There Goes My Baby." This fine package includes three competitive later attempts that fared well in R&B, including Ashford & Simpson's "I Had Love" and Pat Grant & Gwen Guthrie's "Supernatural Thing." ~ Andrew Hamilton
