Lights Out, Sweet Dreams

by: Bert Kaempfert & His Orchestra

More eminently tuneful instrumental from {$Bert Kaempfert}, covers of old {\pop} ({&"Dream,"} {&"Body and Soul,"} {&"Love Letters"}) and {\big band} hits ({&"Sentimental Journey"}) interspersed with engaging originals ({&"Highland Dream,"} {&"Magnolia Blossoms"}). The arrangements are quite varied, with a most satisfying sax solo (and a muted, barely audible male chorus) on {&"Dream,"} an emphasis on flutes as the dominant instrument on {&"Highland Dream,"} and a delightful flourish of pizzicato strings, amid smooth reeds and a spritely trumpet break, on {&"Gemma."} And the trombone and piano solos on {&"Body and Soul"} are delicious listening. Side one is stronger than side two, but overall this is one of {$Kaempfert}'s most enduring collections, ranging from the playful to the sweetly sentimental. All of it, of course, is closely miked in the best "hi-fi" tradition of the period, and will delight stereophiles (among many others) to no end. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
