The Man & The Legend

by: Carl Perkins

First generation rockabilly legend Perkins remakes several of his own hits here, and pays tribute to his contemporaries, including Elvis ("Hound Dog" "Jailhouse Rock"), Fats Domino ("I'm Walkin'"), Little Richard ("Lucille," "Slippin' and Slidin'"), Chuck Berry ("Maybelline," "Roll Over Beethoven"), and Gene Vincent ("Be Bop a Lula"). Perkins himself sounds half his age, both vocally and guitar-wise, and the modernized arrangements here are generally fine, although the harmonica and sax are not instruments one automatically associates with rockabilly. This album will never replace Perkins' groundbreaking '50s Sun sides, of course, but if you want to hear Carl in stereo, this isn't a bad way to go.
