The Best of Fun Boy Three [Disky]

by: Fun Boy Three

Covering Fun Boy Three's brief but productive career, this Dutch collection takes in tracks from the band's two early-'80s albums. Formed by ex-Specials members Terry Hall, Neville Campbell, and Lynval Golding, FB3 took off from the Specials' blend of ska and rocksteady to forge a mix of that also included pop, soul, jazz, and cabaret-style numbers featuring haunting vocal harmonies and primitive-sounding tribal percussion. Along with the remix numbers "The Lunacy Legacy" and "The Funrama Theme," the disc also includes other non-album cuts like "The Alibi" and "Summer of '82." Beyond that, the CD is a highly subjective mix of album sides, which unfortunately doesn't include such highlights as "Our Lips are Sealed," "It Ain't What You Do," and "The Telephone Rings." Topped off with the Bananarama-feature "Really Saying Something" and the grand tango ballad "Things We Do," this best-of collection doesn't quite qualify as an ultimate collection, but it will certainly please fans looking for a FB3 roundup with many of the band's EP and singles-only sides. ~ Stephen Cook
