Jan & Dean's Golden Hits [Hallmark]

by: Jan & Dean

This album sums up the highlights of Jan & Dean's early years as a doo wop-style outfit, from their debut with "Jennie Lee" (as Jan and Arnie) in 1958 on Arwin through 1962 and the early Liberty singles "A Sunday Kind of Love" and "Tennessee." Other songs included are "Jennie Lee," "Baby Talk," "Heart & Soul," "Barbara Ann," and "Palisades Park." The sound quality is decent, and the duo does harmonize beautifully, especially when they avoid the pitfall of overly sappy material ("In a Turkish Town," "We Go Together"). Curiously, though put out by Liberty, most of the hits here were hits for Arwin, Dore, and Challenge Records; regardless, it's all enjoyably mindless, impeccably produced and arranged pop/rock, and a great way to kill 30 minutes. ~ Bruce Eder
