From the Very Beginning

by: Nat King Cole

This double LP only contains 20 selections (an hour of music) but it perfectly sums up his early period. Cole's first recording date (as a sideman in his brother Eddie Cole's Solid Swingers) is included along with his four sessions for Decca with his trio which at the time featured guitarist Oscar Moore and bassist Wesley Prince. Although there are plenty of early radio transcriptions currently available, this set has all of his most significant studio recordings up until late 1942. Highlights include his first hit "Sweet Lorraine," "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Hit That Jive Jack." ~ Scott Yanow
