Shows, Vol. 3

by: Nat King Cole

This Dutch release is the third of three albums drawing on television soundtrack recordings from the TV series The Nat King Cole Show of 1956-57. During its first season, the show ran only 15 minutes, and this album presents Cole's performances from four shows in January and February 1957. The format allows Cole, accompanied by Nelson Riddle's Orchestra, to mix recent songs such as "True Love" from High Society with standards like "You're The Top" and "My Funny Valentine" and his hits such as "Unforgettable." He takes to the piano for trio performances of "Just You, Just Me" and "This Is My Night To Dream" and takes a crack at a modified Fats Domino-style arrangement of "Blueberry Hill." The sound is mono, and these albums are primarily of historical interest, but they are welcome nevertheless. ~ William Ruhlmann
