The Essential Byrds [3 CD]

by: The Byrds

This set does a great job of tracing through the Byrds' Columbia Records output between 1965 and 1971, including the big singles "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Turn, Turn, Turn," and "Eight Miles High" as well as key B-sides like Gene Clark's gorgeous "She Don't Care About Time" and stand out album tracks as well. It's easy to trace the Byrds' rapid stylistic changes here, from folk-rock beginnings through psychedelia and into the country rock format that ended up essentially being the band's last incarnation. Serious fans will already have everything here, but for listeners looking for a set that follows the entire arc of the Byrds' history (with the exception of 1973's reunion album, which was less a band reunion than a sampler of what each member was doing with their solo years), this package will fill the bill. ~ Steve Leggett
