The Drifters: Magic Collection

by: The Drifters

A first-rate compilation that features many of the lead vocalists and group members that sang as Drifters. There were two Drifters from Virginia name Charlie Thomas, for instance. People harp on the Temptations' changing personnel, but the Tempts still have a ways to go to equal the Drifters, who once changed their entire group in one blink. The classics read like a who's who of early rock: "There Goes My Baby" (Ben E. King), "Money Honey" (Clyde McPhatter), "Under the Boardwalk" (Johnny Moore), "Up on the Roof" (Rudy Lewis), and "Sweets for My Sweets" (Charlie Thomas) are just samples of the joys found on this 26-song collection, which also includes renditions of Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" and Randy Newman's "Short People." ~ Andrew Hamilton
