Chart Toppers: Romantic Hits of the 50s

by: Various Artists

Priority's Chart Toppers series is an excellent budget-line collection, offering a strong selection of 15 original hits, grouped by a specific theme and decade, on each disc. Chart Toppers: Romantic Hits of the 50's combines rock & roll, doo wop, pop, easy listening and traditional pop hits -- an eclectic bunch, to say the least, but the variety helps capture the feeling of the decade. A few of the songs haven't dated well, but for the most part, the selection of songs is terrific, albeit a little predictable. Among the highlights on the disc are the Everly Brothers' "All I Have to Do Is Dream," Frankie Avalon's "Venus," Ritchie Valens' "Donna," Bobby Helms' "My Special Angel," the Falmingos' "I Only Have Eyes for You," Dean Martin's "Memories Are Made of This," Pat Boone's "Love Letters in the Sand," Doris Day's "Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera)," Phil Phillips' "Sea of Love," Santo & Johnny's "Sleep Walk," Jimmie Rogers' "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" and the Drifters' "There Goes My Baby." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
