Doo Wop Classics: The Glory of Love

Taking advantage of European copyright law, which releases recordings more than 50 years old into the public domain, British budget reissue label Prism Leisure assembled this collection of American doo wop performances originally issued by such labels as Aladdin, Atlantic, Federal, Jubilee, and King between 1946 and 1954. There are 12 U.S. R&B hits included among the 26 selections, among them the chart-toppers "The Glory of Love" by the Five Keys, "Fool, Fool, Fool" and "Don't You Know I Love You" by the Clovers, "Crying in the Chapel" and "It's Too Soon to Know" by the Orioles, and "Sixty Minute Man" by the Dominoes. The sound quality varies, probably depending on whether Prism just borrowed an Atlantic CD for its transfer or had to go back to an original record, which seems to have been the case, for instance, with "It's Too Soon to Know," originally pressed on the It's a Natural label and here exhibiting considerable surface noise. Annotations are scant, and the selection and sequencing seem random. But, as the title says, many doo wop classics are included. ~ William Ruhlmann
