Heartbreakers: 18 Classic Tear Jerkers

The dominant theme of American pop music has always been love and romance in all its guises, from distant yearning to straight out lust, from adoration and silly Cloud Nine happiness to the debilitating pain of love gone bad. Sooner or later everyone figures out what the term "broken heart" means, and American pop music has helped map out the territory. This would have been a cool collection of heartbreak songs if the songs had actually been the original single versions, but these are stereo re-recordings by, as they say, "one or more members of the original group." Although nothing here is patently bad, something intangible is always lost in these kinds of do-overs. ~ Steve Leggett
