The Sensational 60's, Vol. 1

1993's Sensational 60s, Vol. 1 is a disappointing oldies collection with a promising track listing that, unfortunately, features just four original recordings out of its 12 tracks. The originals -- Gene Chandler's "Duke of Earl," Dee Clark's "Raindrops," the Shangri-Las' "Leader of the Pack," and Bruce Channel's "Hey! Baby" -- are undisputed classics and sound great, especially compared to the weak re-recordings that surround them. Flat, glossy versions of the Ad Libs' "Boy from New York City," Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World," and the Crystals' "He's a Rebel" lack the impact and nostalgia of the original renditions of these songs. This collection really can't be recommended to anyone, especially since far better '60s pop compilations have come out since its release. ~ Heather Phares
