Unchained Melodies [K-Tel]

The disclaimer rides below the track listing of Unchained Melodies, prominent yet nondescript in a run-of-the-mill font. "These tracks have been re-recorded by the original artist," it states, "or one or more members of the original group." Which begs a hypothetical yet relevant question: What happens to a song's sentimental value if an original member of Percy Sledge's band hires a Sledge sound-alike to warble his way through "When a Man Loves a Woman"? Since 15 out of its 18 selections are re-versions such as this, Unchained Melodies fails at igniting anything but irritation in the heart of the listener. ~ Johnny Loftus
