Akwid

The American rap/hip-hop duo Akwid comprises brothers Sergio and Francisco Gómez who, prior to emigrating to Los Angeles, originated from Jiquilpan, Michoacán in Mexico. Their cultural roots are key to the brothers' style which draws inspiration from their own experiences as Mexican immigrants arriving the USA. The lyrical content of their material often makes observations about the way Mexican people struggle to fully integrate into US culture and their blend of Afro-American hip-hop influences coupled with a Chicano rap style has won them a loyal fan base for their music, particularly on the West Coast. Their debut album 'Proyecto Akwid' was released in 2003 and was immediately hailed as a seminal work by fans and critics alike. It went on to win two Billboard Music Awards and a Latin Grammy. The brothers have since capitalised on this initial success and are seen as highly influential players in the West Coast rap and hip-hop scene with eight successful studio albums to their credit.
