August 08

August 08 appeared to be a contemporary R&B newcomer in 2018, but he was well-known behind the scenes as a songwriter, arranger, producer, and background vocalist. A late bloomer but a quick study, Ray Jacobs was inspired to learn multiple instruments, write, and produce after hearing Dwele's 2008 cover of Bobby Caldwell's "Open Your Eyes." Under his birth name and the alias August Grant, Jacobs' efforts were credited on several releases across 2016 and 2017. During this period, his most popular work was heard on Wale's "Fashion Week" and DJ Khaled's "I'm the One," the latter a number one pop hit in the U.S. and a chart topper elsewhere. In February 2018, as August 08, Jacobs was featured on the finale of Rich Brian's Amen album, and then released "Funeral," his debut single. Both recordings were issued through the label 88rising. A follow-up single, "Lately," arrived a few months later and both songs were included on his debut EP, Father. In the early part of 2019, two more August 08 singles arrived, including the smooth Smino collaboration "Blood on My Hands." ~ Andy Kellman
