Barthold Kuijken

Barthold Kuijken is a leading authority and artist of historical performance practice on the Baroque flute and recorder. From a musical family, he is the youngest of three brothers. After studying modern flute at Bruges Conservatory he went on to complete further study at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles and the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. Whilst in Brussels he developed an interest in early flute and recorder music and has devoted his life to mainly performing music of the Baroque era in chamber groups and also larger ensembles such as Parnassus Ensemble, Collegium Aureum and La Petite Bande. Kuijken enjoys performing chamber music with his older brothers Wieland playing the cello or viol and Sigiswald playing the violin. They have toured together throughout Europe, Asia and America, and have released several recordings including 'French and Italian Flute Music of the Eighteenth Century' (2008) on which the brothers perform trios by various Baroque composers such as Corelli, Blavet and Montéclair. Other recordings by the Kuijken ensemble include Couperin's 'Les Nations' (2001), Haydn's 'Six Quartets Op 5' and 'London Trios' (2006), 'Bach vs Haydn 1788/90' (2015) and Bach's 'Musicalisches Opfer/Musical Offering BWV 1079' (2015). The group have also branched outside Baroque performances with 'Debussy's Chamber Music' (2016). Barthold is a principal flute teacher at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles. He has written a book titled 'The Notation Is Not the Music: Reflections On Early Music Practice and Performance' (2013). He is the musical and artistic director of the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra.
