Bbno$

Born June 30, 1995, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Alexander Gumuchian is a rapper, singer, and songwriter better known by his stage name bbno$ ('baby no money'). Alongside several hit musical collaborations, he also has a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology at the University of British Columbia. The reason for both of his choices of music and academia stemmed from the same original event: he broke his back in 12th grade and this stopped him pursuing a career as a professional swimmer. Having started playing music in a band called Broke Boy Gang, he broke away to start recording as a solo artist in September 2016. Following a number of collaborations including his most enduring partnership with Yung Gravy, and exposure via social media, to his surprise, he found himself to be very popular in China where he was received millions of streams. However, what really broke him in that country was when a Chinese dance crew called TFBoys performed to his track “Yoyo Tokyo” in 2017. While the song brought him his initial success, bbno$ has since deleted “Yoyo Tokyo” from his catalog available in the West because it lacks the quality he was seeking in his own output. He released a series of digital EPs and albums – including Bb Steps (2018), Recess (2019), and I Don’t Care At All (2019) – before 2020’s Baby Gravy 2, a collaboration with Yung Gravy, which was his first physical (i.e., vinyl) release. Later that year bbno$ released Good Luck Have Fun, but the album didn’t chart. His next album, 2021’s Eat Ya Veggies, proved to be a Top 20 release in Finland and Lithuania and reached the Top 40 in Norway. The album featured the Canadian top 30 single “Edamame” (featuring Rich Brian).
