Benny Spellman

R&B singer Benny Spellman made his name on his 1962 hit single 'Lipstick Traces (On a Cigarette)'. Written by Allen Toussaint, the single peaked at number 28 on the Billboard R&B Chart and number 80 on the Hot 100. The track was later covered by The O'Jays, The American Breed and Ringo Starr, each time boosting the original song's popularity. Before his breakthrough, he provided backing vocals to Ernie K-Doe's number one single 'Mother-in-Law'. He continued to record throughout the 1960s, later taking up a position in public relations for a beer company. He passed away in 2011 at the age of 79.
