Chris de Burgh

Born in the Santa Fe Province in Argentina, the son of a British diplomat and an Irish secretary, Chris de Burgh spent much of his childhood in Malta, Zaire and Nigeria, before graduating from Trinity College, Dublin, and signing his first professional recording contract with A and M records in 1974. His debut single Far Beyond These Castle Walls failed to chart upon its release, but his second single, Flying, whilst not enjoying much success within the UK, topped the Brazilian charts for 17 weeks. This became a common theme for de Burgh during the 1970s; his success in South American and European countries was always offset by his failure to make any long-lived significant impression in the UK and US charts. However, his most famous single Lady In Red did top the UK charts in 1986 - as well as in 24 other countries - and he enjoyed modest success with albums such as Into The Light and Flying Colours. In 2007 Chris De Burgh became the first western musician to play in Iran since the Iranian Revolution 28 years earlier.
