Dominic Fike

Dominic Fike went from obscurity to major-label success quickly with his unusual blend of alternative hip-hop and cabana pop. Born in 1995 in South Florida, he grew up with a single mother who was in and out of jail and spent much of his time hanging out with other skaters and musicians in the area, listening to alternative rock by acts like Jack Johnson, Blink-182 and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Despite their listening habits, however, it was mostly rap that interested Fike and his friends when it came to performing. Fike put out tracks from time to time and performed a few shows with his friends, but it was in 2017 that his career really accelerated. The young rapper spent some time under house arrest, reportedly for assaulting a police officer, and during that time recorded his six-track EP 'Don't Forget About Me'. It was released in December that year and instantly attracted attention from several major labels. A bidding war ensued and he signed a deal with Columbia rumoured to be worth $4 million. His earlier work was promptly scrubbed from the Internet and in October 2018 'Don't Forget About Me' was officially released through Columbia, with its headline single '3 Nights' showing up on numerous playlists and getting played on rotation on BBC Radio 1.
