Firefall

The American country-rock band Firefall was formed in 1974 in Boulder, Colorado, by former Flying Burrito Brothers member Rick Roberts and former Zephyr guitarist Jock Bartley. Joined by bassist Mark Andes, drummer Michael Clarke, and guitarist Larry Burnett, Firefall released a self-titled album in 1976 and reached Number 28 on the Billboard 200. The record's most enduring single, "You Are the Woman," fared even better, hitting Number 9 on the Billboard 100 and Number 6 in Canada. Two additional albums followed in quick succession: Luna Sea (1977) and Elan (1978), with each record peaking at Number 27. Both albums produced successful singles; Luna Sea's "Just Remember I Love You" topped the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, while Elan's "Strange Way" climbed to Number 11 on the Hot 100. Firefall continued to enjoy success on the Adult Contemporary chart for several years, with "Goodbye, I Love You" reaching Number 10 in 1979 and "Love That Got Away" peaking at Number 9 in 1980. Albums like Cloud Across the Sun (1980), Undertow (1980), Break of Dawn (1982), and Mirror of the World (1983) followed, but Firefall's popularity diminished as popular musical trends evolved throughout the 1980s, and another album did not appear until 1994, when Bartley reformed the band for Messenger. Now featuring a revised lineup, the group continued to tour and record new music for more than two decades, with newcomer Gary Jones making his debut as the band's vocalist with 2020's Comet. Meanwhile, Firefall's older hits continued to resonate across the world, as evidenced by the unexpected return of "You Are the Woman" to Singapore's charts in 2022.
