Kastelruther Spatzen

Formed in Kastelruth, South Tyrol, Italy in 1976, Kastelruther Spatzen is a folk group founded by Karl Schieder alongside Walter Mauroner, Valentin Silbernagl, Oswald Sattler, Ferdinand Rier and Anton Rier. Most of the members had been singing together in Musikkapelle Kastelruth before forming Kastelruther Spatzen. They scored their first hit with "Das Mädchen mit den erloschenen Augen" in 1983 and followed that with their first album Viel Spaß und Freude. The group was extremely prolific and released many albums over the next few years including Ich sag’s Dir mit Musik (1985), Musikantengold (1986), Weihnachtssterne (1987), and Wenn Berge träumen (1988). During this run of albums, the band’s founder, Karl Schieder, left the group in 1986. However, Kastelruther Spatzen continued without him and achieved more success after his departure. In Austria, they scored their first number 1 album with 1989’s Doch die Sehnsucht bleibt, which was also their first album to chart in Germany, reaching number 27 on the albums chart. The group continued to achieve chart success in both countries with albums such as Berg ohne Wiederkehr (2004), Leben und leben lassen (2012), Heimat – Deine Lieder (2015), and Die Sonne scheint für alle (2016). While Kastelruther Spatzen albums would regularly reach number 1 in either Austria or Germany, they achieved a milestone when their 2021 album HeimatLiebe hit the top of the albums chart in both countries along with achieving a number 1 in Switzerland. Their next album, Freundschaft aus Gold, hit number 1 in Switzerland and number 2 in Germany and Austria. Kastelruther Spatzen has also released many compilations throughout their career including Das Beste aus 35 Jahren (2018) and 40 jahre - Geschichten, die das Leben schreibt (2023), which reached number 13 on the German Albums chart.
