Kumi Kōda

Kumiko Kōda (November 13, 1982), professionally known as Kumi Koda, is a J-pop and R&B artist from Kyoto. Born into a family of musicians, she harbored ambitions of becoming a professional singer from a very young age. After coming in second at Avex's Dream Audition talent search, she managed to land a record deal with sub-label Rhythm Zone and made her official debut with the single "Take Back" (2000), followed by "Trust Your Love" in 2001. Both singles were also recorded in English, with the latter reaching the top of the Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales chart. Affection, her studio debut, appeared in 2002 and went to Number 12 in Japan. In 2003, she gained notoriety after her songs "Love Across the Ocean," "Maze," and "Real Emotion/1000 no Kotoba" were featured in the incredibly popular Final Fantasy video game franchise. Between 2006 and 2015, Kumi Koda became one of the best-selling and most celebrated music artists in the Japanese pop scene, with 8 consecutive albums reaching Number 1 on the Oricon Albums Chart. and over a dozen Top 10 singles. Heart, her seventeenth studio full-length, saw the light in 2022 and peaked at Number 9 in Japan.
