Lang Lang

During his career as a classical concert pianist, gifted Chinese musician Lang Lang – born on June 14, 1982, in Shenyang, Liaoning - has been on an extraordinary journey. The child prodigy was initially expelled from his piano tutor's studio for a perceived lack of talent. However, Lang Lang has progressed to become one of the premier classical artists to emerge from China. He has continued to thrill concert audiences all over the world with his combination of classical talent and his rock star showmanship. Lang Lang emerged onto the classical music scene in 1999 at the age of 17. His flamboyant stage presence and style inevitably drew some criticism from the notoriously conservative world of classical music. However, his supporters have noted that Lang Lang manages to effectively combine showmanship without dumbing down the performance and interpretation. Accolades have been bestowed upon him by performers such as Herbie Hancock, and his talents have earned him gigs in venues as diverse as The White House, Hollywood Bowl, and Vienna's Schönbrunn Palace. His catalog of recordings includes studio albums, live releases, soundtracks, and more. Released on a variety of labels including Sony Classical, Deutsche Grammophon, and Telarc, his albums include Tchaikovsky/Mendelssohn: First Piano Concertos (2003), Memory (2006), Dreams of China (2008), The Mozart Album (2014), Romance (2017), Piano Book (2019), and Bach: Goldberg Variations (2020), which was released in various formats including a four CD edition. Lang Lang’s soundtrack work includes The Banquet (2006), The Painted Veil (2007), and the video game soundtrack Gran Turismo 5 (2010). Later studio recordings include the critically successful Bach: Goldberg Variations (2020), Lang Lang at the Movies (2020), The Disney Book (2022), and Saint-Saëns (2024).
