Louis Langrée

French conductor Louis Langrée is the son of organist and theorist Alain Langrée. He began his musical studies at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg, but did not formally study conducting there. In 1983 he gained his first professional music position as vocal coach and assistant at the Opéra National de Lyon, a post which he held until 1986. He was then given the position of assistant conductor at the Aix-en-Provence and Bayreuth Festivals, before moving to L'Orchestre de Paris in 1989. His first conducting position in the USA was at the Spoleto Music Festival in 1991. He also worked in the UK and Europe, gaining his first position as music director at the Orchestre de Picardie from 1993 to 1998. He was music director of the Opéra National de Lyon from 1998-2000, Glyndebourne Touring Opera from 1998-2003 and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège from 2001-2006. Whilst he has continued to work in other countries worldwide, Langrée has mainly been based in America as music director of the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York Since 2002. He has been the principal conductor of the Camerata Salzburg since 2011 and the music director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra since 2013. In addition to his concert performances, Langrée has a significant output of recordings with various orchestras including Orchestra of the Opera National de Lyon, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Camerata Salzburg and Le Concert d'Astrée. He has recorded many different composers, including the symphonies of French composers César Franck and Ernest Chausson and the piano concertos of Franz Liszt, Maurice Ravel and Erwin Schulhoff with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège. He has worked with internationally renowned soloists including pianist Claire-Marie Le Guay and clarinettist Jean-Luc Votano. He is also an award-winning opera conductor for his interpretation of Ludwig van Beethoven's 'Fidelio' with Glyndebourne Opera in 2001. His recordings with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra include Aaron Copland's 'A Lincoln Portrait' narrated by Maya Angelou and works commissioned for the orchestra by composers Zhou Tian, Thierry Escaich and Sebastian Currier. Langrée has produced recordings of a diverse range of operas including Gioachino Rossini's 'Le Comte Ory' and Ambroise Thomas's 'Hamlet' with Opera Comique and the Orchestra des Champs Elysses in 2019. His album of orchestral works 'Transatlantic' (2019) with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra features works by American composer George Gershwin and two composers who moved to America and made it their home, Igor Stravinsky and Edgard Varèse.
