The British indie-rock band Pale Waves formed in 2014 in Manchester, where frontwoman Heather Baron-Gracie and drummer Ciara Doran both attended the British And Irish Modern Music Institute. The students initially billed themselves as Creek, adopting the Pale Waves moniker after adding guitarist Hugo Silvani and bassist Charlie Wood to the lineup. The band's dark, 1980s-influenced pop sound earned attention from the indie label Dirty Hit, who signed Pale Waves in 2017 and released their debut single, "There's a Honey," that February. After touring North America with The 1975, Pale Waves reissued "There's a Honey" in November 2017 as a double-sided vinyl single. Also featuring the song "Television Romance," the vinyl single climbed to Number 2 on the UK Physical Singles Chart and paved the way for the band's debut EP, All the Things I Never Said, which arrived in early 2018. The EP topped the UK Physical Singles Chart and the UK Vinyl Singles Chart. My Mind Makes Noises, Pale Wave's debut album, was released later that year and cracked the Top 10 in the UK, topping Billboard's Heatseekers Albums Chart along the way. A critical and commercial success, My Mind Makes Noises expanded Pales Waves' popularity in the UK, where the group received a 2018 NME Award in the "NME Under the Radar" category and a 2019 Q Award for "Q Best Breakthrough Act." Who Am I?, Pale Waves' sophomore album, jettisoned the band's '80s sound in favor of pop-punk influences and LGBTQ themes. Released in 2021, the album debuted at Number 3 on the UK Albums chart.
