Peter Ind

Jazz double bassist and producer Peter Ind was born in Middlesex, England on July 20, 1928. At the age of 8, he began studying the violin, but switched to the piano six years later. Influenced by the music he heard on radio broadcasts during World War II, he started playing publicly by the age of 16. After taking classes at the Trinity College of Music in London between 1944 and 1946, he switched to bass and took lessons from Tim Bell and James Merrett. By 1947, Peter Ind was a full-time musician and playing regular gigs. In 1949, he was a musician performing on the Queen Mary, which was sailing to New York. While in New York, he met jazz pianist Lennie Tristano and other musicians in the city. He ended up taking lessons from Tristano and performing with him at the legendary jazz nightclub Birdland. Peter Ind relocated to New York and, by 1953, was touring with saxophonist Lee Konitz. His first studio recordings were with Konitz in 1954 and was featured on five albums up through 1957. Peter Ind also recorded with Paul Bley, Jutta Hupp, Warne Marsh, Jimmy Raney, and Buddy Rich in the mid-to-late 1950s. Peter Ind also became a popular producer during this period, setting up his own recording studio in 1956. He produced sessions for Gerry Mulligan, Zoot Sims, Booker Little, and others. He also became a popular engineer, working on several different projects. Peter Ind then set up his own label, Wave, and released Looking Out, his first album as a leader, in 1960. In 1963, he moved to Big Sur, California and focused on playing unaccompanied, recording several albums during the three years he lived there. After playing with Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh again in 1965, he moved back to England, continuing his playing, production, and teaching. He wrote two books and released a series of albums on his Wave label including Improvisation - Contrabass (1968), Time for Improvisation (1969), Contra-Bach with Bernie Cash (1970), Triple Libra with Martin Taylor (1981), Jazz Bass Baroque (1988), and Alone Together with Rufus Reid (2000). In 2015, Peter Ind was honored with the Special Award of the British Parliamentary Jazz Awards. Peter Ind died on August 20, 2021, one month after his 93rd birthday.
