Samantha Parton

Vancouver native Samantha Parton is best known as a founding member of award-winning Canadian alt-folk/bluegrass group the Be Good Tanyas. A singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Parton formed the group in the late 1990s with Jolie Holland, eventually adding Frazey Ford and Trish Klein, whom Parton had met while working and attending school in Nelson, British Columbia. Holland left the group during the recording of their debut album, 2000's rootsy Blue Horse, and the band carried on as a trio, releasing two more albums, the critically acclaimed Chinatown (2003) and Hello Love (2006), before going on an official hiatus in 2008 and pursuing various solo projects. In 2012, Parton received multiple injuries to her neck and shoulders and was left concussed after a serious car accident. Just one year later, she endured another automobile accident, and while convalescing, doctors discovered an aneurysm behind her left eye as well as a benign tumor. Friends, fans, and family would eventually raise enough money to offset her medical costs via an online fundraising campaign, and by 2016 she was back on-stage. In 2017, she teamed up with friend and former bandmate Jolie Holland and released Wildflower Blues, which drew on everything from rural blues to ragtime and folk. ~ James Christopher Monger
