Sooliman E. Rogie

Sooliman Rogie, better known by the initials S.E., was, until his death, one of the best known and loved musicians from Sierra Leone. Noted for his sunny, calypso-esque tunes, Rogie managed to combine his musical life with a career in tailoring until a string of hits in the '60s propelled him into full-blown professionalism. He is best known for the song "My Lovely Elizabeth," which was widely covered by West African musicians. In 1973 Rogie immigrated to America, and later still to England, where he died, in 1994, just after releasing his CD Dead Men Don't Smoke Marijuana. ~ Leon Jackson
