Philadelphia lo-fi shredders Birds of Maya recorded two albums (2008's Vol. 1 and 2010's Ready to Howl) but also spawned two offshoot bands. Mike Polizze formed Purling Hiss and Jason Killinger founded Spacin'. Made up of Killinger on vocals and guitar, Paul Sukeena on lead guitar, Sean Hamilton on bass, and Killinger's wife Eva on drums, the group retained Birds of Maya's general lack of regard for sound fidelity and also upped the hooks and singalong quotient markedly, while also stretching some songs out to very spacy lengths. Their first album, Deep Thuds, was released in late 2012 by Richie Records and was a critical success, even landing on legendary indie rocker Stephen Pastel's Best of 2012 list. ~ Tim Sendra
