The Chambers Brothers

The Chambers Brothers were originally a group of actual brothers from Carthage, Mississippi in the early 1950s. Heavily influenced by gospel and folk the group came together as a live act in New York before issuing their first recording, the album 'The Time Has Come' on Columbia Records in 1967, which included the eleven-minute single 'The Time Has Come Today'. Rather than folk or gospel, the album and the single were drenched in the acid rock and psychedelia of its time. This proved to be their biggest hit in what was a lengthy if disrupted career, spending five weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 peaking at number eleven. The group were never able to reach those commercial heights again, and split up in 1972, reforming in 1974. Drummer Brian Keenan died in 1985 and bassist George Chambers died in 2019. Despite not releasing any new material since 1975, the remaining Chambers Brothers continue to tour sporadically.
