Too $hort

Too $hort (born Todd Anthony Shaw on April 28, 1966) helped define west coast rap, signing with Jive and releasing his major label debut, Born to Mack, in 1987. The follow-up, 1988’s Life Is…Too Short, cracked the top 10 on the R&B chart and the top 40 on the main album chart. 1990’s Short’s Dog In The House featured two top 20 rap hits, “The Ghetto” and Short But Funky”. Throughout the 1990s, his albums topped the rap chart and reached the top 5 of the main album chart. 90s singles like “The Ghetto”, “I Want to Be Free (That’s the Truth)”, “Cocktails”, “Getting’ It”, and “More Freaky Tales” were all top 10 rap hits and all placed on the R&B chart. 2000’s You Nasty included his highest charting single, the number 2 rap hit “2 Bitches”. In the 2000s, $hort featured on top 40 hits like Kelis’s “Bossy”, Legacy’s “Something About the Girl”, Chu’s “Gone”, and finally appeared on a top 10 crossover pop hit for on Chris Brown’s “Loyal”. After 2007’s Get Off the Stage, $hort left Jive to form his own independent record label, Dangerous Music, on which he would release four albums in the 2010s including No Trespassing.
